4 Things to Avoid With Your Website

Apr 2, 2013

Navigating the rapidsWhether you are thinking about creating your first website or are thinking about a website redesign, it can seem like you are navigating the rocky rapids. You may even be a bit confused about the design process. After all, there are a lot of things to consider!

Here are Four Things to Avoid in your Website Design

(1) Messy or cluttered look. Having lots of ads, buttons, and other things on the sidebars of your site will distract your readers from your content. And just like walking into a messy or cluttered home, your web visitors may even feel a bit uncomfortable while trying to browse your website.

Give your readers a sense of ease and keep their attention on your content by maintaining a clean, professional website design.

(2) Clashing colors. Choose complementary colors for your website. Using bright neon colors or colors that clash will drive people away. Remember, if someone is reading your site, they need to be “staring” at it. Make your site as easy on their eyes as possible!

(3) Fancy or over the top fonts. You may want to use a fancy font for your website, but it’s better to keep things simple. Fancy fonts can be hard to read. PLUS – here’s another thing to consider. Your reader’s browser may not offer the font you’re using and your site may not appear the same to you as it does to them. Use standard fonts, so you can be sure of what your site looks like to all of your readers. Another option is to venture into the use of Google Web Fonts.

(3) Too many visuals (videos, audios & images). It’s great to provide videos, audios, and pictures along with written content. It gives your readers a variety of ways to receive your content and can keep them on your site for longer periods of time. That being said, don’t go overboard.

It is best to avoid any “auto-start” videos or audios, where the audio starts as soon as people arrive on your site. They may be looking at your site while at work or at home with a sleeping child near by. If audio starts blaring from your site, it can be an annoyance! Guess how fast they'll click that X to close your website!

When choosing a design, always remember the people who will be reading it. It’s easy to just choose the things you like or think are great – but what will your reader like? Remember the site needs to work for them!
